The rumor is confirmed: Pato O'Ward becomes a reserve driver in a Formula 1 team, after the announcement made by McLaren, so the dream of seeing another Mexican in the Grand Circus is getting closer, after the success of Checo Perez for 13 years, and what was Esteban Gutierrez a couple of years ago.

In a statement shared on the team's social networks, it is confirmed that starting next season, the Indycar driver will be the reserve of a team that currently has Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri as main drivers.

This confirms the evolution of the driver from Monterrey, who will be present for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with the team he will defend from 2024 onwards. Pato will make his debut in free practice 1 and the post-season test of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2023.

The future of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at McLaren

As recently as September 2023, McLaren confirmed a contract extension until 2026 for Oscar Piastri, while Lando Norris has signed until 2025.

There is talk that after the 2024 season, there is a good chance of seeing either of these two youngsters jump to Red Bull, especially in the case of Lando Norris, who is a close friend of Max Verstappen.

This could open up an opportunity for Pato O'Ward, who will have a very experienced 2024 in F1.
