Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States to honor the early settlers and Native Americans who came together for a harvest feast. This year, it falls on November 23.
The Plymouth Colony, consisting of English Protestants called Puritans, arrived in 1620 after sailing on the Mayflower for 66 days. Originally intending to land in New York, they settled at Cape Cod, Massachusetts, due to windy conditions.
Before the settlers, the region was home to the Wampanoag people for over 12,000 years. The Thanksgiving festival, observed differently then, was a time for expressing gratitude to the Wampanoag Native Americans who assisted the Pilgrims in surviving a harsh winter marked by disease, lack of food, and other challenges in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The celebration marked a coming together of communities to give thanks for the help they received.
